Busy month catching up with clients calling in to view art in Dublin after my summer working in my studio in Cork.. I thought I would share a few of my work techniques and what works for me. I’m quick to add that these are just suggestions and ideas, not a recipe for everyone else but just suits me!

My studio in Cork has plenty of space to spread out and work on large pieces……In Dublin I work on a small kitchen island , I always stand when working not sure why but maybe going back and forth to view and get materials, …One thing I have to emphasise is you don’t need space , just do it! I have a deep drawer with all my art materials to hand and put out on a counter behind me and then packed away when finished ….done!

I used to teach art for many years and what I found was not starting with rules and restrictions , just getting on with it and getting confidence in producing something that surprises you that you are proud of no matter how simple drives you to experiment and try out different methods and techniques…You cannot absorb instructions about the craft of painting if you have not witnessed for yourself how to mix paint, use a palette knife, brushes and anything else that creates ‘marks’ on paper and canvas…and realise rules are limited… experiment and see what works for you.…

It’s very intimidating to think all art is successful all the time…what you see of my art is an edited selection of what I am totally happy with….plenty get discarded..It’s important to edit and also not get consumed by an unsuccessful day ,turn up, have a go, experiment ,be happy to try new ideas/techniques …we learn more from mistakes than success!!…

Please send me any messages about what you’d like to hear/see more of….
